Safety on a dating platform isn't about adding a report button and calling it done. It's about designing every interaction so that harmful behaviour is harder to execute and easier to catch.
When we started building 2to1, we looked at how most dating apps handle safety: a "report" option buried in a menu, an AI filter that catches the most obvious violations, and a reactive moderation team. It's minimal. And it shows.
We decided to take a different approach — one where safety isn't an afterthought but a foundational design decision that shapes how people interact from the moment they match.
Conversation pacing by design
One of the most effective safety mechanisms isn't a filter or a flag. It's pace. On 2to1, conversations are designed to move at a human speed. That means:
- Limited concurrent conversations. Instead of messaging dozens of people simultaneously, members focus on a small number of connections at a time. This discourages the rapid-fire, low-investment messaging style that often accompanies inappropriate behaviour.
- Intentional conversation starters. Rather than a blank text box, early conversations are guided by thoughtful prompts that encourage meaningful exchange. This makes it harder to open with something disrespectful and easier to start with substance.
- Gradual information sharing. Members don't get access to everything at once. Profile details, photos, and personal information are shared progressively as the conversation develops and trust is built.
Moderation that doesn't wait
Reactive moderation — waiting for someone to report a problem — means someone has already been harmed before the system responds. We've built proactive layers into the platform:
Pattern detection
Our moderation system watches for behavioural patterns, not just explicit content. If someone is sending the same message to multiple matches, if their messaging patterns shift suddenly, or if their behaviour triggers recognised warning signs — the system flags it for review before a report is even made.
Human review
Automated systems are useful, but they miss context. Every flagged interaction is reviewed by a real person who understands nuance. We don't rely on AI to make final calls about someone's safety on the platform.
Community accountability
Because 2to1 is built around shared values and shared intentions, there's a natural layer of accountability. Members know they're part of a community, not just users of a product. That changes behaviour. Not perfectly, but measurably.

Reporting that actually works
When something does go wrong — and on any platform, eventually it will — reporting needs to be simple, accessible, and followed up on. Here's how we handle it:
- One-tap reporting. You can report a message, a profile, or a conversation in a single action. No buried menus. No multi-step processes.
- 24-hour response commitment. Every report receives a human response within 24 hours. Not an automated acknowledgement — a genuine review with a clear outcome.
- Transparency. When we take action, we tell you. Not the specifics of another member's account, but whether the situation has been addressed and what was done.
Safety as a value, not a feature
At the end of the day, safety on 2to1 isn't a feature we bolt on. It's a value that runs through every design decision, every policy, and every interaction. Because if someone doesn't feel safe, nothing else matters — not the matching algorithm, not the conversation prompts, not the community events.
